S/Sgt. Dave Saunders - 2004 Bud Knight Award Recipient
S/Sgt. Dave Saunders has been a member of the Toronto Police
Service for 24 Years. During this time he has worked in an
array of capacities in several police divisions, the courts,
planning and service restructuring.
In September 2000, Dave was appointed as the Toronto Police
Service’s first Youth Crime Co-ordinator. In this role,
Dave envisioned a comprehensive corporate youth strategy in
which the Toronto Police Service would be committed to development
and maintenance of a package of programs and actions that
address all aspects of youth crime.
To date the strategy continues to drive youth program expansion
such as; elementary school safety, youth at risk outreach
programming, youth crime enforcement projects, children under
12 committing offences referral program, an ages 12-17 referral
and pre-charge diversion program, street gang initiatives,
the Serious Teen Offenders Program (STOP) and partnerships
with municipal government and community agencies.
While establishing himself as a leader in the area of youth
violence and the victimization of youth, Dave has also been
a member of several youth-related committees.
These include:
- the Task Force on Youth Violent Crime
- Committee of Youth Officers for the Province of Ontario
- City of Toronto – Youth Gang Work Group and Youth
Safety Subcommittee.
