John Cowan - 2009 Community Award for Youth Service
Recipient
John Cowan has been a teacher with Huntsville High School, Trillium Lakeland School Board for 18 years and is currently a Physical Education teacher. John utilizes his coaching skills and enthusiasm for sport to build community and involve youth as leaders. John not only coaches a number of youth sporting activities, he teaches coaching courses and spearheads youth involvement with community sporting events. He encourages youth to be proud of their accomplishments toward making their community a better place to live.
John actively seeks out support to ensure every family has the opportunity for their youth to be involved in sport. The communities’ growth in sport can be directly tethered to John’s commitment; he organized a town soccer league that continues to provide opportunities for over 750 children yearly. John actively pursues opportunities to showcase the youth community such as hosting the Ontario Youth Winter Games and has recruited numerous youth to participate.
Through John’s involvement with MOTIVATE CANADA, numerous youth from Huntsville have participated in National level conferences and have returned to pass down the knowledge and networks to support all youth in Huntsville. This snapshot of accomplishments and dedication provides an impressive insight into how deserving John Cowan is of the 2010 Community Award for Youth Service
